Heinz Gehring was Titular Professor at the Department of Biochemistry from 1995 until 2011. He was also student advisor and coordinator for Biochemistry.
His research interest focused on structural and functional relationships of Ewing sarcoma proto-oncoprotein on the one hand and on the design, synthesis and testing of potentially useful inhibitors of vitamin B6-dependent enzymes whose specific inhibition is of pharmacological interest, on the other.
Heinz Gehring studied Biochemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich and received his diploma in 1972. He conducted his thesis research in the laboratories of Prof. P. Christen at the Department of Biochemistry of the University of Zurich and obtained his PhD in Natural Science in 1977 from the ETH. Heinz Gehring then accepted a postdoctoral research assignment at B.L. Vallee's Biophysics Research Laboratory of Harvard Medical School. He rejoined the Department of Biochemistry in 1979. In 1987 he was awarded the Venia Legendi for Biochemistry. He retired in February 2011.
